Thanksgiving. Day 12.

Today I am thankful for

Music

Music gets down into the soul of a person
and reaches places nothing else can.

Worship

Christmas

Rock

Blues

Jazz

just about any type of music – except country
{but even then there are a few songs & artists I like}

Music relaxes me, always has.

My favorite radio station is Air1 Radio. This is the one my car is tuned to nearly 99% of the time. The 1% being the times I am listening to Christmas CD’s. 🙂

Growing up, I was fortunate enough to participate in the

Grandest Band in ALL the Land
The Incomparable
Pride of Broken Arrow

Today I can look back at the shows we performed and see how far they’ve come and am so honored to have been a part of such a legacy. It was hard work getting there but it was well worth every bit.

Where is the Soul?

Most of you know by now that I am a full-time student, an English major. Recently in my Creative Writing class we wrote out one line of a poem, four words really, and then passed those along to a classmate. Random words, whatever struck our fancy at that moment, and our classmates were faced with the daunting proposition of turning those words into a full blown poem.

The line I received:

Where is the Soul?

I immediately filled with trepidation. Not only was this a topic not easily defined but, it came from someone with an incredible vocabulary and sense of diction. I was concerned I would not be able to do it justice.

For three days, I suffered from some serious writer’s block. It did not matter that I was doing researching on various definitions and locations of “soul”. Nothing was working. I even grabbed a book of essays focused on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” television show for some inspiration (it is a text we use in one of my writing classes). One of the essays struck a chord with me and gave me a starting point.

Once I began writing I did not stop.

I wrote for nearly an hour and, when finished, was so very satisfied with where I ended. It was an amazing moment for me. This was my writing “aha!” moment. I had finally figured out was has been missing from all of my poetry from this semester.

That vital ingredient?

Me.

I had become so caught up in the “formula” of writing poetry that I had forgotten to make it uniquely mine. My poetry from earlier this semester sounds absolutely nothing like me. Fortunately, we have the chance to rewrite our poems and present a portfolio of our completed works along with the drafts and processes we took to get from point A to point B.

I suppose I cannot really bring you this far without sharing my poem that inspired this post. However, I have not turned in my portfolio and do not want to have my poem available online at this point. Thank you for understanding.

Ten Day Challenge. Day 8.

So, way over on my facebook page a friend challenged me to a 10 day challenge. Normally I won’t do these things but this one piqued my interest. It’s a quite a bit different than your normal “challenges”. At least what’s considered normal for Facebook these day! :)

Here’s the rules:

Day One: Ten things you want to say to ten different people right now.

Day Two: Nine things about yourself.

Day Three: Eight ways to win your heart.

Day Four: Seven things that cross your mind a lot.

Day Five: Six things you wish you’d never done.

Day Six: Five people who mean a lot (in no order whatsoever)

Day Seven: Four turn offs.

Day Eight: Three turn ons.

Day Nine: Two smileys that describe your life right now.

Day Ten: One confession.

Here’s my Day 8 –

Three turn ons:

Rather – the 3 things I look at first 🙂

1. Hands. Hands are incredible. They can be used to build and to heal, but they can also be used to destroy. You can tell a lot about a person by their hands.

2. Smile. A smile that makes the eyes twinkle. A real one. Not that fake stuff or that “trying to be cool” smirk.

3. Eyes. Eyes are the window to the soul. That being said – no secrets. 🙂

*This list is NOT all inclusive!

Reckless Abandon.

I don’t know about you but when I hear the word “reckless” it’s not a good thing. It means that someone is being destructive and could potentially harm themselves or others. It can also mean a very expensive ticket should you be pulled over for reckless driving.

It’s kind of funny if you think about it. Take the word reckless apart and you  have “reck” and “less” so in theory you would have “less recks”. That would be a good thing, right?

But what about abandon? That doesn’t exactly sound fantastic either. When you abandon something or someone doesn’t that mean that you no longer care about the well-being of what or whom you’ve abandoned? You’ve walked away and cut all ties to what or whom you once belonged.

reck⋅less:

utterly unconcerned about the consequences of some action; without caution

a⋅ban⋅don:

to leave completely and finally; forsake utterly; desert; to give up the control of: to yield (oneself) without restraint or moderation

*courtesy www.dictionary.com

I read that to mean we should “give ourselves to God, completely, without restraint or moderation and with no concern of the consequences”. Completely = mind, soul, body, spirit. I’m okay with that. I mean really, who else would I want to have utter and complete control in my life?
