I’ve spent the last few months fairly silent on my blog, not intentionally that is just the way things worked out this semester. This semester was one of the most difficult semesters thus far in my college career. I read depressing novels for class (Night, The Great Gatsby, and The Awakening to name a few). I wrote more papers per week than I thought possible. I gave more presentations and speeches than potentially ever. And I believe I may have already forgotten more than I learned at this point. Well, maybe not quite.

Since switching from a Nursing major to an English major I’ve learned quite a few things: most notably that I have no clue how to write. There is no formula, not exactly. Write something that catches the attention of the reader and then keep the attention of the reader. That’s it. It’s not anywhere near as easy as it sounds.

Probably one of the hardest lessons I learned this semester was that it is near impossible to write a good story or poem without a personal, emotional connection. Without that connection the words written are just that. Words. Meaningless, emotionless marks on a page.

I also gained an interest in politics – of all things. The Government class I took a couple semesters ago may have laid the foundation for that but this semester really fueled the flame of that fire. I haven’t figured out the connection there because all of my classes this semester were writing, English, or speech related. I blame speech.

Along with 15 hours in classes I coached soccer. My boys were on the same team – probably the one and only time this will happen. We called ourselves the Secret Agents and all of us had 00 in front of our numbers. We were cool. We didn’t win many games but we had fun and learned lots about teamwork and sportsmanship. I learned that I may never coach again. I missed getting to just watch my kids play this season.

And my best friend got married! That in and of itself was one of the craziest, busy weekends ever.

So, there’s a brief update. Some of this will be explored more in later posts as I have plans to post at least once a week during the summer. That’s the plan anyway.
