Mistaken Identity.

Does your life define you?

How often do you say the following phrases?

I’m broke.

I can’t.

I don’t have enough.

We are broke.

We can’t.

We don’t have enough.

I’m sorry.

Too old.

Too young.

Too big.

Too small.

Have you ever really, truly paid attention to the words that are coming out of your mouth? Really? So often our words define us and the words we speak are words we eventually believe. We create our own world by the words that come out of our mouth. I know we’ve all heard the phrases ‘whatever you believe in your heart is what will eventually come out of our mouths’ and ‘whatever you allow yourself to see, hear, or participate in will invade your heart like a thorn bush’. It works that way with words too. Whatever you speak is what your heart believes — even if your heart doesn’t believe it initially, if you say it enough it will take over and suffocate you.

So many people today are looking for who they are in a bottle, or a magazine,in others opinions of themselves, in their appearance, in their online personas, in the brand of their clothing, on the street, even in church — yes, I said in church– but they’re all looking externally.

Allowing ourselves to create the habit of saying the above phrases and others just like them is another way Satan pulls our true identity away from us.

In recent months I’ve become increasingly aware of the number of people who describe themselves as a situation or a problem or an issue and not as a person. Oh don’t get me wrong. I am well aware that the things going on in a persons life apply to who they are but do not solely embody that persons being.

Here’s an example:

During the first week of my current online class we were asked to introduce ourselves and to tell why we are taking the class (Intro. to Lit. if you’re curious). Most of the replies were along the following format: “My name is ________. I work at ______. I’m in this class because ________.”

That is nearly an exact replica of about 80% of my classmates introductions. Some of them were a little more wordy but the result is the same. The only part of that sentence directly pertaining to the person in question is the name — the rest of it pertains to what this person does and why.

In the last year the number of people I know who separated or divorced increased dramatically and I’ve noticed here too, a lot of my friends will say, “I’m a single mom” or “I’m almost divorced” or many other variations of those phrases.

While those things may be true, they do not define who you are!

Yes, you may be a single mom {or dad} who works hard to make ends meet and literally has no time for yourself — so little time in fact even your dreams are about work or the kids or school. Or, you sit there and bemoan the fact you don’t know who you are anymore because people only know you as “so and so’s mom” (that goes for married women too!) or “so and so’s spouse” or “{fill in the blank here}” — instead of you.

You could sit here and say you like to travel, watch movies/tv, read, long walks on the beach, sky dive, base jump, sail, run, or any number of things you enjoy doing. They all have one thing in common;

Those things still do not define you.

There are a few places in the Bible I want to mention that may help you define who you are.

Jeremiah 1:5

{New English Translation}

“Before I formed you in your mother’s womb I chose you.
Before you were born I set you apart.
I appointed you to be a prophet to the nations.”

1 Peter 2:9

{New English Translation}

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may proclaim the virtues of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

We are CHOSEN. God CHOSE you. You weren’t just thrown to Him or left on His doorstep and greeted with “oh yay another person” {sarcasm inferred}. The God who created the Heavens and the Earth, created man and woman, CHOSE you. The God who created YOU knew who you were BEFORE you were even formed.

Then there’s this one.

Jeremiah 29:11

{New English Translation}

For I know what I have planned for you,’ says the Lord. ‘I have plans to prosper you, not to harm you. I have plans to give you a future filled with hope.

There is so so so much here! God CHOSE you and knew you BEFORE you were formed AND He made plans for you. So really. God knew the person you were to become because He put those plans in your heart BEFORE you were formed. PROSPEROUS PLANS full of HOPE. There’s no way “reality” is better than that.

Psalm 37:4

Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart.

I absolutely love this verse. God knows our DESIRES because He put them there — remember those PROSPEROUS PLANS. He knows what you truly want, way down in your deepest of hearts. All you need to do is LOSE YOURSELF in Him to FIND YOURSELF.

God CHOSE you BEFORE He formed you.

He made PROSPEROUS PLANS full of HOPE specifically for you.

He will give you those desires of your heart when you LOSE YOURSELF in Him in order to FIND YOURSELF.
