You’ve seen it for months now. Mt. Dew. Pepsi. Coka-Cola. Dr. Pepper. All the big beverage names are doing “throwback” labels. Going back to using a design from many, many moons ago. I’m gonna be honest and tell you the one I saw recently on Pepsi is one I recognized from when I was about 7ish …. It’s a smart idea if you think about it. They’re using a design they already have for a generation who doesn’t remember it. And they’re branding and marketing it as throwback so we know it’s old (well, older) which gives it a vintage, going back to the basics, type feel. Super intelligent idea.
This is an idea that can be used elsewhere too. Say, 30th birthday parties?! 🙂
One of my friends said she had a throwback party when she turned 30 earlier this year. Since we were born in 1980, she had an 80’s party. I didn’t ask for details and was unable to attend her party unfortunately, but they had a blast (from the past!)!!
So, put on some leg warmers, grab your Jazzercise VHS tape, maybe an ABBA cassette, and let’s get this party started!!
I found this great link on “how to throw an 80’s party“. Some good info. Reminds me of stuff I don’t remember! 😉
80’s Music. Music is always key at any party. Sets the mood and gets people talking, moving around, and eating, etc. Madonna. ABBA. Michael Jackson. Prince. those artist are all named on that website BUT here are a few that aren’t. Petra. White Heart. Amy Grant. Stryper. Don’t forget to carry your GIANT boom box on your should as you walk around!! Ah, the good ol’ days!
80’s Decorations. Records anyone? Do you even know what a record is? Just in case, it’s this giant 12in-ish circle made of vinyl and filled with music. Granted, there’s not anywhere near as much music on a record as there is on a CD these days. And record players are few and far between. So, we use them for decoration. Up on the wall typically, but they work well as placemats, hotspots (for not so hot dishes), and my favorite – bowls. Yup. some enterprising genius turned them into bowls!
There’s also the idea of getting cardboard cutouts for people to stick their heads through and have their pictures taken. Now, personally, this is only good if you use cutouts of famous people or movie characters such as ET, the Goonies gang, Gremlins, TRON (the 80’s one of course!), The Karate Kid, Dirty Dancing (really what girl wouldn’t want her picture taken with Patrick Swayze!), or Grease. Movie posters from some of these movies and more are good for decorations too!
8o’s Fashion. Pull those MC Hammer pants outta the closet or those leather pants you haven’t worn in 30 years (for the guys). Tie some ribbons in that BIG hair (guys – grow a mullet!). Grab a baggy sweatshirt and a mini skirt. Add some leg warmers. Or you could dress up as your favorite Star Wars character, Ghostbuster’s character, or a valley girl type chicka (see mini skirt with sweatshirt combo above). All kinds of matchy-matchy with the colors or go extra bold and mix the brightest colors you can find! You’re good to go! Almost. 80’s makeup – that should be it’s own category but I’m gonna leave it under fashion cause that’s just how it was. Make sure that you have bold, bright colored eye shadow on! On the hair – the bigger the better. And if you can get a headband on even more awesome!
80’s Games. Twister! Pong. Pac-Man. Oh man. There’s so many games to play I don’t know where to start or stop! Simon. Hungry Hungry Hippo. Super Mario Brothers (I still have an original NES somewhere!). Rubiks Cube. Legos. Donkey Kong.
The most important thing though, no matter who shows up and who doesn’t, no matter who’s in 80’s garb and who isn’t, is that you’ve gotta have fun!!
