A Heart Like David’s.
David is known, not as a man who made massive mistakes but, as a man after God’s own heart.
Many people in the Bible had incredible relationships with God:
Moses: Numbers 12
2 Chronicles 16:9
9 For the eyes of Jehovah run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly; for from henceforth thou shalt have wars.
*God is looking for a man/woman who’s heart is after His.
44 Our fathers had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness, even as he appointed who spake unto Moses, that he should make it according to the figure that he had seen.45 Which also our fathers, in their turn, brought in with Joshua when they entered on the possession of the nations, that God thrust out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;46 who found favor in the sight of God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.
*David found favor in God’s sight.
22 And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king; to whom also he bare witness and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who shall do all My will.
*David is a man after God’s own heart.
1 Samuel 24 (whole chapter)
1 Samuel 13:14
14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: Jehovah hath sought him a man after his own heart, and Jehovah hath appointed him to be prince over his people, because thou hast not kept that which Jehovah commanded thee.
*I sought a man after my own heart.
23 Keep thy heart with all diligence;
*Guard your heart.
#1.) A Sensitive Heart.
1 Samuel 24:5-7
5 And afterward David’s heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.6 He said to his men, The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord’s anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the Lord’s anointed.7 So David persuaded his men with these words and did not permit them to attack Saul. And Saul rose up and left the cave and went on his way.
*David spares Saul’s life.
*David cut Saul’s robe. His conscience bothered him immediately.
*David restrained his soldiers from killing Saul in the cave.
*Cutting the robe tells Saul that David has his life in his hands.
*David said that God had annointed Saul to be king and that eve if he is successor it’s God job to put him there. Basically, God put Saul there God will remove Saul.
*What would be different in your life if your conscience bothered you more?
2 Samuel 24:10
10 Behold, this day your eyes have seen how the Lord gave you today into my hand in the cave. And some told me to kill you, but I spared you. I said, I will not put out my hand against my lord, for he is the Lord’s anointed.
*David took a census. Even when God said no!
*If you count what you have you will rely on those numbers instead of relying on God to fight your battles.
*If God lead you into battle He will lead you through the battle.
1 Chronicles 21:1
1 Then Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel.
*Satan tempted David where he had failed before.
#2.) A Heart of a Worshiper.
1 Samuel 16:23
23 And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him.
*Saul yielded to evil spirits.
*David would play the harp and evil spirits would flee. Saul would relax.
*Worship comes from the heart. God listens deeper than to just our sounds. He listens to what is in our hearts.
2 Samuel 6:13-16
13 And when those who bore the ark of the Lord had gone six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal.14 And David danced before the Lord with all his might. And David was wearing a linen ephod.15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of the horn.16 As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart.
*David danced and was not afraid to let people see.
*He knew his help came from God. The Ark represents the presence of God. When the Ark came back into the city David rejoiced. He leapt and danced.
*Praised God anyway.
#3.) A Heart of a Champion.
1 Samuel 16:21
21 And David came to Saul and entered his service. And Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer.
1 Samuel 17:45-47
45 Then David said to the Philistine, You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.4647 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.
*Even Saul saw the heart of a champion and made David armor bearer.
*David vs. Goliath. David marched right in. The Lord doesn’t deliver by the sword or the spear but will deliver to our hands.
*David knew what he had going in to face Goliath; a covenant with God. Uncircumcised Phillistine meant Goliath had no covenant with God.
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
*May be facing a giant but God made us giant killers!
#4.) A Heart of a Leader.
1 Samuel 22:1-2
1 David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave of Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they went down thither to him.
*David escaped to a cave. His family (father and brothers) heard and joined him.
*People in debt, distress, and discontent gathered around him and he became their captain.
*Must be a leaders leader in order to raise these kinds of people up to make warriors of them.
*Developed loyalty in them.
1 Samuel 30 (whole chapter)
*The enemy raided Davids camp.
*David’s soldiers wanted to stone him.
*David encouraged himself and then talked to God and was encouraged by Him. God told David to pursue and that he would catch up to the enemy and that they would get everything back.
*We should have people around us to encourage us but it doesn’t always work that way.
*David encouraged his men to go out with him to get the enemy. 200 of Davids men stayed behind, weary from 3 day march.
*The 400 men who chased after the enemy brought back everything that had been taken PLUS all of the plunder the enemy had taken from other camps. Wanted to leave the 200 who stayed behind out of the reward but David said they would ALL share equally.
2 Samuel 23:15-17
15 And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me water to drink of the well of Beth-lehem, which is by the gate!16 And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Beth-lehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto Jehovah.17 And he said, Be it far from me, O Jehovah, that I should do this: shall I drink the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.
*The water became valuable because the men risked their lives. David gave it to God.
#5.) A Repentant Heart.
2 Samuel 12:5-7, 13
5 And David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As Jehovah liveth, the man that hath done this is worthy to die:6 and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.7 And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;
13 And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against Jehovah. And Nathan said unto David, Jehovah also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.
*Nathan said, “you are that man”
*God has forgiven your sin and you won’t die.
#6.) A forgiving Heart.
1 Samuel 20:33
33 And Saul cast his spear at him to smite him; whereby Jonathan knew that is was determined of his father to put David to death.
*Forgave Saul for trying to kill him.
2 Samuel 16:5-14
5 And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, there came out thence a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera; he came out, and cursed still as he came.6 And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left.7 And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Begone, begone, thou man of blood, and base fellow:8 Jehovah hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and Jehovah hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son; and, behold, thou art taken in thine own mischief, because thou art a man of blood.
9 Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head.10 And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? Because he curseth, and because Jehovah hath said unto him, Curse David; who then shall say, Wherefore hast thou done so?11 And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, who came forth from my bowels, seeketh my life: how much more12 It may be that Jehovah will look on the wrong done unto me, and that Jehovah will requite me good for his cursing of me this day.13 So David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hill-side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust.14 And the king, and all the people that were with him, came weary; and he refreshed himself there.
2 Samuel 19:18-23
18 And there went over a ferry-boat to bring over the king’s household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, when he was come over the Jordan.19 And he said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.20 For thy servant doth know that I have sinned: therefore, behold, I am come this day the first of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.
21 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed Jehovah’s anointed?22 And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?23 And the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king sware unto him.
*Absalom threatened to kill
*David mocked by Shimei.
*Told his men to leave Shimie alone. Forgave Shimie.
#7.) A Listening Heart.
1 Samuel 23:4
4 Then David inquired of Jehovah yet again. And Jehovah answered him, and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thy hand.
1 Samuel 30:8
8 And David inquired of Jehovah, saying, If I pursue after this troop, shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue; for thou shalt surely overtake them, and shalt without fail recover all.
2 Samuel 2:1
1 And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And Jehovah said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.
2 Samuel 5:19, 23
19 And David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into my hand? And Jehovah said unto David, Go up; for I will certainly deliver the Philistines into thy hand.
23 And when David inquired of Jehovah, he said, Thou shalt not go up: make a circuit behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry-trees.
*David was confident in his relationship and that God would answer him. He inquired of God and God answered.
1 John 5:13
13 These things have I written unto you, that ye may know that ye have eternal life, even unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God.
*He hears us. Be confident.
15 For ye received not the spirit of bondage again unto fear; but ye received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.16 The Spirit himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are children of God:
8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go:9 Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding;
Take time to spend with God.
Refuse to believe otherwise.
Take time in God’s Word.
God WILL speak to you in every situation.
